Nail and hair supplements: growth sets the timescale
This category disappoints more people than almost any other, and usually for one reason: the tissue in question grows at a rate nothing can hurry, and nobody says so on the label.
The arithmetic nobody prints
Fingernails grow roughly 3 mm a month, toenails around 1 mm. A whole fingernail replaces itself in about six months; a big toenail takes twelve to eighteen. Nothing you swallow changes that rate. The practical consequence is unavoidable: whatever a supplement does, it acts on the new tissue forming at the base, and you will not see it until that tissue has grown out. Damage already visible stays visible until it reaches the end and gets cut off. A product promising visible nails in four weeks is promising something growth rates forbid.
| Tissue | Growth rate | Full replacement | Earliest fair judgement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fingernail | ~3 mm / month | 4–6 months | 3 months |
| Toenail | ~1 mm / month | 12–18 months | 6 months |
| Hair | ~1 cm / month | Continuous cycle | 3–6 months |
Most of it is not a deficiency
Biotin is the ingredient this category is built on, and genuine biotin deficiency is rare in people eating ordinary diets. Supplementing it where none exists has little to offer, which is the uncomfortable centre of this market. Worse, high-dose biotin interferes with laboratory tests — thyroid panels and, importantly, the troponin test used to diagnose heart attacks. That interference is well documented and has produced both missed and falsely suspected diagnoses. Tell any doctor ordering blood work that you take it, and stop a few days before planned tests.
What actually does cause brittle nails and thinning hair
- Iron deficiency, with or without anaemia. Testable, common, and genuinely responds to correction.
- Thyroid disease, in either direction. Testable.
- Repeated wetting and drying, plus detergents and nail products. Far and away the commonest cause of brittle fingernails, and not a nutritional problem at all.
- Fungal infection, which looks like damage but needs antifungal treatment, not nutrients.
- Severe or rapid dieting, which pushes hair into a shedding phase a few months later.

Questions people ask
How long before I see a difference?
Three months for fingernails, six or more for toenails, three to six for hair. Those numbers come from growth rates rather than from product performance, and nothing taken orally changes them. Any supplement in this category needs to be bought with that timescale accepted in advance or it will disappoint.
Does biotin work?
It works for biotin deficiency, which is uncommon in people eating a normal diet. Most of the evidence people cite comes from studies in deficient subjects or in specific nail conditions, not from healthy adults wanting stronger nails. If your levels are fine, there is little for it to correct.
Is high-dose biotin safe?
It is well tolerated, but it interferes with common laboratory tests, including thyroid panels and the troponin test used to assess chest pain. That has caused real diagnostic errors in both directions. Tell any doctor ordering blood work, and stop several days before planned tests.
What usually causes brittle fingernails?
Repeated wetting and drying, more than anything nutritional. Washing up, hand sanitiser, nail polish remover and frequent manicures all contribute. Gloves for wet work and a simple moisturiser often achieve more than any supplement, and cost less.
Could my nail problem be fungal?
Possibly, and it matters because the treatment is entirely different. Thickening, crumbling and yellow or brown discolouration, often starting at one corner and usually on toenails, are typical. No supplement addresses it. Topical and oral antifungals do, slowly, and a diagnosis is worth having before spending on either.
Why did my hair start shedding months after I was ill or dieting?
That delay is characteristic. A physical stress such as illness, surgery, childbirth or rapid weight loss can push a large share of hair follicles into a resting phase, and the shedding becomes visible two to three months later. It is usually self-limiting, which is worth knowing before buying anything in a panic.
